A historical Florida state park.
Situated towards the northeast of Fernandina Beach on beautiful Amelia Island, Fort Clinch State Park features stunning vistas of the local natural landscape, wildlife viewing of rich, diverse ecosystems, and the historic 19th-century brick fortress Fort Clinch. Named in honour of General Duncan Lamont Clinch, a prominent figure during the Florida wars, the only time the fort was used in battle was as a base of Union operations during the Civil War in America.
Visitors take a step back in time as they explore the several well-preserved, historic rooms, galleries and grounds of the fort, in which soldiers lived and worked as carpenters, masons, cooks, and blacksmiths, as well as demonstrated skills such as small arms demonstration and cannon firing. Daily, park staff provide living history demonstrations of life as a soldier or volunteer engineer who worked in the fort during the Civil War, bringing the history of the park to life for history buffs and culture vultures alike. On the first weekend of every month, the grounds bustle with a garrison of soldiers that re-enact life in the fort in 1864 – soldiers engaging in marching drills, cooking, and other daily activities, being quarantined in the infirmary or detained in the jailhouse, sutlers displaying their wares, and more.
Family-friendly recreational activities within the state park include swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, and shelling as well as shark-tooth hunting along the jetty and St. Mary’s Inlet. With scenic vistas and an abundance of wildlife, biking is a wildly popular activity within Fort Clinch State Park as well, the adventurous can even hike and bike the six-mile off-road multi-use trail within the park grounds. An iconic attraction on lovely Amelia Island, Fort Clinch State Park is the perfect travel destination with something for every type of traveller.
