A tourist attraction of today was a place of great historical importance yesterday.
Minutes away from Singapore’s Central Business District, you simply may not find another area that is as rich with the nation’s history and culture as the Fort Canning Park. The venue that sited the palace of the native Malays who ruled the land centuries ago, the Fort Canning Park is also largely remembered to be the place where the British made the hard decision to surrender to the Japanese in the midst of the Second World War in 1942. An iconic hilltop landmark, the Fort Canning Park is definitely an integral part of Singapore's history.
Today however, the 18-hectare area has transfomed into a cultural hub catered to all local and visitors of all ages and walks. It plays host to musical concerts of internationally renowned artistes, houses artefacts from Singapore's past, and even has a spice garden. Yet, despite all its has become, the Fort Canning Park has not lost its identity. The Battle Box, an underground World War II army complex, still remains, alluding to the importance of remembering the past. There is even a Maritime Corner, which displays the story of Singapore. It certainly pays to head down to this hill and learn about Singapore’s rich history.
