The Red Brick Government Office Building – Hokkaido’s well-known symbol.
Constructed in 1888, the Former Hokkaido Government Office used to overlook the jurisdiction of the whole of Hokkaido. Today, this red brick building has been converted into a museum, with documents and exhibits dedicated to telling stories of Hokkaido's past. Even before setting foot inside the building, visitors should admire the exterior architecture, which adopts a Neo-Baroque style. Check out the historical galleries inside, which include a giant map of Hokkaido, created by the same person which gave Hokkaido its name! After touring the galleries, visitors can head out to the garden for a leisurely stroll, or even enjoy the beautiful blooming of the different types of cherry trees during the popular flower viewing season.
