Fontana dell’Acqua Paola

A Baroque gem, the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola was actually the inspiration for Trevi Fountain.

Designed by Giovanni Fontana using beautiful white marble from the ruins of the Roman Temple of Minerva nearby, the architect brilliantly constructed a massive gateway of five arches for the reception of water. The Fontana dell'Acqua Paola sits on top of the Janiculum hill. Admire the papal tiara and keys at the peak of the fountain and try to spot the Borghese family's coat of arms bearing an eagle and a mighty dragon, held up by charming angels.

Look out also for the inscription in tribute to Pope Paul, who successfully brought clean water to the residents of the Janiculum district. Savour the tranquillity of watching five streams of water pouring through the arches into five basins made of fine marble and try to catch glimpses of the Botanical Garden in the background.
