Fontana dei Dioscuri

A fountain guarded by twins.

The Fontana dei Dioscuri is the iconic fountain that stands opposite the Quirinal Palace, which was once a summer residence for the Pope back when it was first constructed in the late 16th century. Presently, it is one of three official residences for the President of the Republic of Italy. The fountain that stands today contains some original parts that were commissioned in 1586 by Pope Sixtus V. The obelisk is flanked by two statues of the Dioscuri, who were twin brothers in Greek mythology, and is where the fountain gets its name from.
