Fondation de I’Hermitage

A home for beautiful artwork.

Don’t worry, this attraction isn’t actually a hermitage that advocates isolation. Contrary to expectations, the Hermitage Foundation is a museum of fine art in Lausanne. The collection is housed in a beautiful 19th century mansion that looks like something out of a period film, with a delicate pastel façade and numerous shuttered windows that give it a welcoming look. Its lovely exterior gives the casual visitor a hint of the beauty that lies within: a rotating collection of artwork of the museum’s own selection. This is every person’s definition of true art: exquisitely rendered landscapes, portraits and objects that breathe life into the soul thanks to their masterful portrayal. Although the artworks range from the Renaissance period to the present day, they are alike in their careful curation and their ability to move even the most un-artistic person. And once you’re done admiring the museum’s treasures, you can head outside to enjoy its beautiful sprawling grounds, that offer a majestic view of the nearby cathedral and lake. In truth, this experience is not so much the typical museum tour as a celebration of beauty.
