Folkeparken

An open-air museum preserving Tromsø’s coastal culture.

The Folkeparken is an open-air museum that gives insight into life in 19th century Tromsø at the height of its glory days as a bustling coastal town. Situated in the idyllic setting of Tromsø’s most popular excursion area and with 13 houses and buildings from Tromsø, the Folkeparken offers an immersive experience of the city’s roots and old coastal culture.

The museum’s exhibitions explore all facets of life during Tromsø’s days as a trading and fishing centre. The boathouse, Engenesnaustet, sits by the sea filled with 19th century boats and tools, as if still in use by fishermen of that time who could walk in at any moment. Kvitnesgården, the main building of a trading post, allows visitors to see North Norway’s old trading centres for themselves. Two magnificent Nordland boats take centre stage in Stornaustet, which houses an exhibition detailing life during the cod fishing season, when men would journey out to hunt for the valuable cod while their wives tirelessly weaved and mended for them at home.

Such was the history of a place which was once lively and teeming with eager clients, serving as a financial and social hub to the outside world.
