Flamengo Park is better known as Aterro do Flamengo, or Aterro for short. It translates to “landfill”, which refers to part of the bay that was filled by land. This land is now where Flamengo Park has been situated since construction was completed in 1965. Designed by Lota de Macedo Soares and Roberto Burle Marx, the park stretches over approximately 120 hectares of land and is today the city’s biggest site for leisure. Locals often flock here to engage in sports activities like football and skating, while joggers opt for a morning with the beautiful sunrise as a backdrop. It is also occasionally used as the starting and ending point of marathons held in Rio de Janeiro. If you’re looking to do something that doesn’t require much energy, head to the Museum of Modern Art or Monument to the Dead of World War II to learn more about Brazil’s art and culture and history respectively. Or for a completely relaxing day, sit by one of the park’s many trees for a picnic as you enjoy the breeze. It doesn’t matter what you do at Flamengo Park – you’ll always be treated with a beautiful view.
