Austvågøya, Norway
Fiskerkona (The Fisherman’s Wife)

A lighthouse and a work of art all in one.

Resting on the harbour of Svolvær, on the island of Austvågøya in Lofoten, Norway, is a figure that will intrigue you, drawing you in like the call of a siren. Built in 1999, the Fiskerkona, or Fisherman’s wife, is a statue, showing the wife of a fisherman, wishing and waiting for him to return to her safely.

The brainchild of Norwegian sculptor Per Ung, this structure has the function of a lighthouse, with its green light reaching a distance of about 11.5m. The lady stands on a round white pedestal, whose bright red base sits upon a rock. On stormy days where waves crash violently against the lighthouse, the statue looks completely spellbinding! A sight you can’t forget, the lady appears to stand valiantly and unwavering in the face of such violence. Come and be enchanted by the Fiskerkona, and don’t forget your camera!
