Filerimos Monastery

A monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in Rhodes, Greece!

The Monastery of Filerimos is situated on a hill above Ialyssos Village which is about 10km away from Rhodes City. The monastery was built to commemorate Virgin Mary the Life-Giving Source, otherwise known as Zoodochos Pighi. The exterior architecture of the monastery is very different from the other monasteries throughout the rest of the country. It was built with stone according to Gothic style and the site that it currently stands on once sat an older Byzantine monastery.

It was established in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John who had occupied the island back then. In the interior, there is a holy monument of the Virgin Mary. In the area surrounding the monastery, there are ruins of a baptistery that is shaped like a cross as well as the ruins of Ancient Ialyssos and an underground church of St. George tracing back to the 14th century! Stand on the magnificent cross complete with viewing platform and take in the views Greece has to offer.
