How can you pass up the chance to roam the halls of a temple which, according to legend, was built by a Sakyamuni Buddha himself?
When builders showed up to a spot 2 km away, expecting to find the building materials that had been gathered before and get started with the construction of this temple, they were stunned to discover nothing but empty land. In a twist of fate, the missing pillars and girders had ended up assembled on the current site. Monks decided that it must have been arranged by Buddha, hence naming the temple flying temple for its mystical transporting abilities.
Facing the Kawakarpo Peak, the temple is renowned for its unparalleled views of the Meili Snow Mountian. Taoists, Buddhists and Confucianists come together in this sacred place to worship theses great stone gods. Upon entering the main hall, you will be dazzled with the beauty of intricately carved designs of figures, floral patterns and other embellishments. The centrepiece is a magnificent sculpture of the Dragon King giving away his daughter’s hand in marriage, carved from the actual, authentic rock of the surrounding mountains.
Other carvings of note are the eighteen disciples of Buddha and those of the highly acclaimed Pilgrimage to the West. Wake up dark (yes, dark!) and early, head outside and watch the spectacular sunrise peak over the mountains and shed its golden light over the rocky terrain, before enjoying a hearty Tibetan breakfast cooked up by the locals.
