Faraglioni

This is Capri’s defining icon.

When you hear Capri, the visual that springs to mind is that of three sea giants. Naturally, the Faraglioni, the three rocks of Capri, are rock outcroppings that rise from the sea. The origins of the naming that are likely to have come from the Greek word, “pharos”, for lighthouse, for the rocks were often a kind of primitive lighthouses used to guide vessels to safety.

Also known as “stacks”, the second of the rocks, in the middle, features the famous stone archway. Named Faraglione di Mezzo, it is a favourite for adoring lovers to exchange a kiss as they pass through the arch. The rocks are also home to a rare species of blue lizard found only on Capri, and scientists speculate that this is to camouflage with the surrounding blue waters. You can admire the rocks up close on a boat tour, or bathe in the shadow of the Faraglioni at the nearby beaches. No matter what you do, don’t miss the breathtaking sight of the sun setting in the background, with the Faraglioni making for the perfect subjects of your photograph. A visit you simply can’t miss while in Capri!
