Fantoft Stave Church

A magnificent medieval wooden church with impressive dragon heads.

Fantoft Stave Church is a historic site located deep within a forest. In typical stave church fashion, Fantoft Stave Church is a soaring, multi-storey timber building that has a simple, but peculiar look. Dressed completely in brown, with unique shingled roofs and stylised dragon heads, the church may look somewhat like a traditional Japanese house. But this is an authentic medieval church, unaltered and seemingly untouched by time. The dragon motifs were derived from local superstition that these mighty creatures could fend off evil spirits. Despite being located near a rural village, Fantoft Stave Church is one of the more easily accessible stave churches in Norway, with a short but scenic uphill trek that takes you straight to the looming building. Inside the church, you can explore the extravagant yet cosy wood interior that is starkly different from the grand churches you are familiar with. The idiosyncratic Fantoft Stave Church is a unique experience you won’t forget.
