Exhibition Palace (Veletržní palác)

Czech out the prized international and local artwork in this grand palace.

Once the largest building of its kind in the whole world, and the very first Functional building in Prague, this exhibition palace has now been incorporated into the National Gallery. However, this was only after its revamping after being destroyed by a massive fire in 1970! This museum is essentially art within art, considering how the building’s architecture itself is a masterpiece. The architects aimed for a distinctly avant-garde design, yet somehow achieved a classic and modern look with the neatly arranged glass windows reflecting the clouds in the sky. Clean lines feature throughout the building and the rooms are awash with white sunlight, the perfect setting to allow you to enjoy the pure value of the exhibits. 20th century French and European art is at the forefront in this gallery, including works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Monet, Georges Braque, Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Klimt and countless others. Czech art really holds its own in this gallery, with the handiwork of František Kupka being traced from his initial dabbling in the art scene all the way to his bold, geometrical abstract pieces. Czech artists were just as up to date with contemporary art as the best of the Parisians, especially in the cubism scene.

Of course, paintings aren’t the only stars of the show, with numerous sculptures, industrial art, stage design and architecture also completing a visit to this gallery. In particular, it holds among the ten largest and best graphic collections in Europe with 450,000 prints, drawings and more that date back to the Middle Ages, such as Jan Zrzavý’s collection of drawings and the well known self-portrait by Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
