Eureka Valley Sand Dunes

Dunes that offer up more than just sand.

Rising up at a towering 180m from the ground, the Eureka Valley Sand Dunes are sure to make even the tallest humans feel petite. Spanning an area of about 8 km², these massive dunes are one of the tallest you are likely to see in North America. These dunes have been part of the Death Valley National Park since 1994, and are home to many rather rare botanical species. Plant enthusiasts will relish in the opportunity to view species that can only be found here, such as the Eureka Evening Primrose, the Eureka Dune Grass, and the Shining Locoweed. Be a keen listener and try to hear the singing sand! A rare phenomenon when dry grains of sand come into contact with each other. When visiting, wear comfortable shoes for walking as vehicles are not permitted in the dunes itself.
