Essaouira Fishing Port

The Atlantic sea in the old port of Essaouira is home to a sea of blue boats.

Essaouira used to be a thriving international seaport up to the 19th century – in fact, it was Morocco’s most important trading port between Africa, Europe and the Americas. In more recent days, the Essaouira Medina, which is a small fortified town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of course, the town itself is popular among tourists are seeking to do a little shopping and a little sightseeing, but it would be a shame if you ended up overlooking the beautiful harbour over here. At first glance, you might find it a little strange to see the waters such a deep shade of cerulean, but in actual fact, these are actually little boats. The harbor is where you will find an abundance of little boats just floating about and bobbing up and down as the waves come in. All of them are painted blue as well, which is why it would seem as if your eyes were playing tricks on you. We’re not sure why every fisherman chose the same colour but they definitely add so much more beauty to this place. If you’re in Essaouira, don’t miss this view.

Tips Before You Go
If you’re a sucker for seafood, head to one of the harbourside stalls where freshly caught fish are grilled on the spot. These are extremely cheap too, so you can eat till you’re stuffed without feeling a pinch in your wallet.
