Essaouira Fish Market

No one goes to Essaouira and leaves without their tummy full of seafood.

It is no surprise that Essaouira is renowned for its absolutely fresh and scrumptious seafood. As a coastal town, Essaouira is naturally blessed with an abundance of fish nearby. The town was formerly of incredible importance, as its location made it a key place for trade. Today, fishermen continue to sail out to sea, catching tons of fresh fish. You might think that all these fish are destined to be sold at the local fish market, but in fact, there is a preliminary market located near the harbour. It is over here that you will be able to smell the aroma of freshly grilled fish wafting through the air, the smoke making your lips water and your stomach rumble. The fish market on the other hand, is located in the centre of the town. If you’d rather cook your own seafood, then step right in. The moment you enter, you will be spoilt for choice, seeing as there are just so many varieties of fresh seafood sold here. Be sure to bring your bargaining game with you as well, because the prices here are in fact negotiable. As long as you’re confident enough, you should be able to make it out of there with a sizeable catch of your own. The only question is, do you really need that much fish though?

Tips Before You Go
Since the smell at fish markets can be a bit too overwhelming to some people, we recommend that you bring a handkerchief to cover your nose. It’s also a good idea to wear covered non-slip shoes, as the fishmongers might send water splashing everywhere as they chop fish into fillets for cooking.
