Erhai Lake

An azure sphere of clear water and endless skies.

Translating to Ear Sea in English, Erhai Lake is an ear-shaped lake nestled within the highland plateau backed by Cangshan Mountain. Hemmed in on all sides by urban cities and towns, Erhai Lake serves as the wellspring of life for the local Bai people. As an important food source for the surrounding areas, the lake swells with the constant hive activity by local fishermen who catch fish with the most curious method. The flurry of trained birds that dive and catch fish to return to fishermen is an unbelievable sight to behold.

With azure skies that meld into turquoise waters to form a stunning landscape of unadulterated blue, Erhai Lake is also famous for its breath-taking scenery. While the impressive girth of forty kilometres lengthwise makes it virtually impossible to explore Erhai Lake in its entirety, it is a must to enjoy a scenic hike or cycling trip along the shoreline. Appreciate the ethereal beauty of Cangshan Mountain and its eternal snow against the blue waters, and marvel at the rounded curve of the swollen moon reflected in the clear lake during a full moon. But Erhai Lake is not just a pretty sight – you can take a detour to one of the charming islands located along the eastern shoreline of the lake, or visit one of the many villages and temples that dot the lake perimeter to experience the rich culture of the Bai locals. A picture of unchanging beauty; it is never too late to visit Erhai Lake.
