Erasmus Bridge

A harp-shaped architectural work of art.

Iconic against the Rotterdam city skyline, the Erasmus Bridge is a modern, brilliantly designed architectural feat by architect Ben van Berkel. The harp-shaped bridge overlooks the largest harbour in Europe, and its asymmetrical pale blue pylon towers at an impressive height of 139-metres, earning the bridge its nickname “The Swan”. Its current moniker was derived in commemoration of the renowned Christian renaissance humanist Desiderius Erasmus.

Officially opened by the Queen of the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix in 1996, the bridge can be crossed on foot or via vehicle – both modes of crossing provide amazing views overlooking the Maas river and the surrounding city landscape. Situated in the heart of Rotterdam, the bridge connects the north and south parts of the city, and is a popular hangout spot amongst locals as well. The Erasmus Bridge has even been featured in several special events over the years, including Jackie Chan’s film “Who am I?” in 1998 and Tiesto’s exciting concert performance in 2005.
