The home of Switzerland’s largest church organ.
Built in 1120, the beautifully preserved Engelberg Abbey is a Benedictine monastery with great historical and cultural significance, with the earliest clerical and cultural references dating as far back as the 12th-century. Today, approximately 30 monks continue to live and work in the Engelberg monastery, to preserve the liturgy and intellectual and artistic focus that governs much of the monastery’s activities and interests.
Home to an impressive Collegiate Library of over 20,000 volumes and 200 choice manuscripts, including the complete set of writings by Martin Luther, the Engelberg Abbey leads as an exemplary centre of knowledge and learning. With strong Baroque influences, the interior of the church shines with beautifully engraved altar artwork by Spiegler, and the largest pipe organ in Switzerland, making the monastery a unique and spiritually appealing destination to rejuvenate the soul.
