Engakuji Temple (円覚寺)

True bliss in the hills of Japan.

The East Asian culture is well-known for their concept of “zen”, and one of the best places to respect this ideology in Kamakura is the Engakuji Temple. Among one of Kamakura’s five great Zen temples, the Engakuji Temple is located upon the slope of Kita-Kamakura's hills, maintaining the classical Chinese Zen monastic design. The original temple was established in 1282, but due to an earthquake, the main hall had to be reconstructed in 1964.

You absolutely must view the shrine of Buddha’s tooth in the Shariden hall, and the large bell on the hill, which are of such great significance to the locals that they have been declared national treasures. Do visit during the autumn months where leaves change into beautiful warm colours, definitely an instagrammable sight! To complete the experience of being Zen, grab a steaming cup of tea or some lovely amazake (sweet sake) at the teahouse, and take in the tranquil atmosphere.
