Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum

Unexpected from the name, but a unique artistic experience.

It may seem a little eccentric to design your own final resting place, but that is exactly what famous Norwegian artist Emanuel Vigeland did. Resting within the Emanuel Vigeland Museum is the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum, the tomb where the artist’s ashes have been laid to rest. As you enter the room, the atmosphere is overwhelming. Shades of brown cover the walls and ceiling, along with artistic frescoes. Following the theme of Vita (life), the naked bodies of men and women in intimate positions are painted, along with depictions of women giving birth and infants crawling around. You may find the room to be rather dark, but this is done on purpose, as the artist wanted the frescoes to be gradually unfurled to the visitors as their eyes adjust to the darkness. For an artistic experience like no other, visit the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum. You will surely be able to appreciate the themes that he explores through his artworks here.

Tips Before You Go
This attraction may not be suitable for children, as the frescoes here are primarily focused on the themes of life and death, with nudity and human intimacy being the primary medium to channel these themes. Those who have claustrophobia may not enjoy it either, as the room is rather dark and the acoustics here creates a rather gloomy and hushed atmosphere. But then again, it is a mausoleum after all.
