El Hedim Square (Lahdim Square)

This is where you’ll find Africa’s largest gateway, which is also considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world.

The El Hedim or Lahdim Square is a huge square located in the historic medina of Meknes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square was built during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail and originally served as a gathering and demonstration area, particularly for the army. It also separates the medina and the imperial city. Many people come here to take a look at one of the world’s most beautiful gateways (and the largest in Africa) known as the Bab El-Mansour Gate. But besides the gate, the scent of food being grilled and various spices and aromatics is probably what will catch your attention first. The other side of the square is lined with stalls selling all sorts of things from food to local handicrafts. Even at night, this place is still very much lively with people gathering and chatting away in every corner. You might not be able to pry yourself away from here even after spending a few hours here. After all, there’s just so many things to see and do here.

Tips Before You Go
Shopping here is relatively cheaper as it is catered more to the locals. What’s more, you can even bargain with the shop owners to get lower prices as well, so why not shop here instead of some boring old shopping mall?
