Eikandō-Zenrinji (永観堂禅林寺)

Kyoto’s famous spot for autumn colors.

Eikandō Zenrinji is the head temple of the Seizan branch of Jōdo Buddhism. Conveniently situated in between the Path of Philosophers and the Nanzen-Ji Temple, this temple consists of buildings connected by covered walkways and staircases. Explore the grounds and see the Shaka-dō and the rock garden, the Goe-dō, and the Amida-dō, where the temple’s main statue of Buddha is housed. Visitors should not miss out on the Tahōtō Pagoda as well, located on the hillside above the temple. It offers breath-taking views over the city of Kyoto, and during the autumn season, the leaves on the trees and hills turn a vibrant red, creating an impressive and beautiful landscape that one will never forget. Special illuminations of the temple are held during the autumn season, and the temple is also open in the evenings for visitors to enjoy the spectacular view.
