The sloping western street of Nagasaki.
The Oranda-zaka (Dutch Slope) is a sloping street that leads up to a hillside in Nagasaki, and a former residential area for many foreigners after the city opened its port to traders in 1859. Despite its namesake, the Dutch were not the only foreigners living there; the term Dutch referred to anything that was western to Japan, as they were the dominant foreign population at that time. Today, this historical site still houses a few residential sites, one of which is the Higashi Yamate 13, which is opened to the public. Admire the old-western style of this house, and see how foreigners lived in Nagasaki in the past. A café is also available on the ground floor of this house, should visitors wish to rest their feet.
