1900 metres up in the air, lies a magical dreamland that will take you out of this world to a realm of unparallelled beauty.

Down the slopes of the mighty Aliao Mountain, 400 acres of rice terraces, like silver lakes of mercury, gleam in a striking pattern of varying sizes all the way down to the banks of the River Hong. Throughout most of the year, the terraces are concealed behind a mysterious sea of swirling cloud, but in those precious moments when the cover lifts and the unforgettable sight of the glistening pools is revealed, you’ll feel a distinct sense of honour to bear witness to such magnificence. The carefully and meticulously crafted terrace steps are not just valuable aesthetically, but are also a representation of the admirable effort and fortitude of generation of Hani people. For the past 1300 years, the locals have fashioned an ingenious system to channel water that collects at the top of the mountain to the terraces below. Man’s handiwork and nature’s beauty come together to create a sight to behold; the tufts of cloud scudding across the sky, likewise sailing across the waters - a reflection equally, if not more, as impressive as the original. The most spectacular time comes at the moment of transition from the darkness of night to the light sunshine of a brand new day, when colours which cannot be predicted illuminate the pools in shades of sunrise so intense it seems impossible that it’s real.

Each season offers a unique charm of its own, making a visit at any time of the year a fresh experience. From November to April the terraces are irrigated, filling them with pools. In spring, watch the farmers harvesting and working peacefully in the fields, and watch the mountainside flourish a cheerful green.

Tips Before You Go
Out of the two available viewing decks, it is better to pick the one that is higher for the best views of the sunrise and good angles for photography. Set aside time to visit all the other scenic areas in the vicinity like the Laohuzui Rice Terraces, Bada Rice Terraces, Jingkou Folk Villages, and Hani Ethnic Market in Shengcun. Since the sunrise times vary between 6.00 to 7.00 a.m., it is recommended to get there early around 5.30 to secure a good viewing spot to set up your camera. A wide angle and telephoto lens is recommended, together with a tripod, lens hood and polarizer. Since the weather is changeable, make sure you bring protective gear to keep your equipment dry.
