Just across the Bell and Drum Tower Square from its sister building the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower of Xi’an is a majestic and beautiful tower that has been an integral part of life in the ancient city since it was first built in 1380. The Drum and Bell Towers’ original purpose was to help the city mark the passage of time. The bell in the Bell Tower would ring in the morning, while the drum was sounded every evening and night, helping the citizens schedule their days.


Today, you can climb up to the second floor of the Drum Tower and take in the stunning views of the square and the Bell Tower. Here, you can also find a fascinating exhibition that tells you everything you need to know about ancient Chinese drums. The largest drum in China also resides in the tower!
