The Dowse Art Museum is one of New Zealand’s best attractions to visit for contemporary art aficionados. Since 1971 when the museum was opened, it has been home to numerous temporary and permanent exhibitions and is especially well-known for its extensive collection of crafts, about 2000 of them, such as textiles and jewelry. Learn about Maori history by stepping into the Nuku Tewhatewha permanent exhibit, a pataka used for food storage.

Art is not just contained strictly within the museum, but exhibited outdoors as well – art truly knows no boundaries! In the Dowse Square, you can see artwork from talented artists such as the Tree Rooms which function as living sculptures, and Swimmers in Space with the “swimmers” suspended mid-air.

Explore the world of contemporary art at Dowse Art Museum. From exhibitions to installations, from educational conferences to artist talks, this museum does it all and you simply should not give it a miss!
