Dongnimmun Gate

The Arc de Triomphe of South Korea!

The Dongnimmun Gate is currently situated on the spot once known as Yeongeun, where envoys from other nations were treated. When a Chinese envoy visited, the Korean King would go out through his door to greet and invite him in. An interesting thing to note is that the construction of the gate was funded by Korean citizens. Many today compare this gate to the Arc de Triomphe due to its rather similar external appearance. The gate is made of granite and the passageway measures 14.28m in height. At the top, the word ‘Dongnimmun’ is carved in Korean with the national flag drawn on each side. On the inner-left side are stone staircases which lead to the attic of the monument. The national flower Mugunghwa — otherwise known as the hibiscus syriacus, is planted around the attraction and today it immediately grabs the attention of passers-by. Do stop by to have a look if you happen to chance by the area!
