Dominican Monastery

Marrying art, history, and religion in true Dubrovnik fashion.

With its origins in 1225, the Dominican Monastery in Dubrovnik is a massive structure that you cannot miss. Housing a church and museum within, this religious complex is perfect for culture vultures. The building itself follows a more Gothic architectural style, with its high arched openings. This building is doubly important for Dubrovnik, as it was built upon a weak point in defence of the city and thus, the city walls surround the monastery.

Within the complex, you will find the museum, housing precious works of art dating back to the 15th century. Amongst all that artwork, the object that will probably take your breath away is not even in the museum. In the arch above the main altar of the church rests a magnificent Crucifix. Made from gold by Paolo Veneziano in the 14th century, this holy dedication will make your journey worth it.
