Jerusalem’s most recognisable landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
The Dome of the Rock is a Muslim shrine located on the Temple Mount within the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel. Not only is it UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is also known as Jerusalem’s most recognisable landmark. The monument was initially established in 691 at the order of Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik but the original dome collapsed in 1015, and was only rebuilt in 1023. Today, it remains one of the oldest extant architectural works in Islamic history. The newest addition to the building is the gold-plated roof which can be seen from miles away. The site is of great significance for worshippers of the Abrahamic faiths. Muslim traditions connect the Dome to the creation of the world and the story that Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey to heaven commenced from the rock at the middle of the monument. Jews also believe that this was where Abraham was instructed to sacrifice his son to God. A place of such religious significance is certainly not to be missed if you happen to be in the Old City!
