Police station, jail, fort, museum. Would you believe that this was all one place? The Al Koot Fort, also known as the Doha Fort, began life as a police station in the 19th century. It is believed that this was done to protect the nearby Souq Waqif. Subsequently, in the early 20th century, this spot became a jail. In 1927, it was taken over by Sheikh Abdulla bin Qassim Al Thani, who refurbished it to serve as a fortress. Finally, the monument you see before you today was converted into a museum. This is a great place for you to get a glimpse into the Qatari culture, as you will find pictures of people going about their daily lives, and some handicrafts and artwork to give you a greater understanding of their culture. Architecture fans will love seeing the Al Koot Fort, a pristine piece of the city’s history standing tall and proud.
