District Six Museum

A poignant remembrance of a once-vibrant and diverse community.

District Six Museum is perhaps the most emotional and touching exhibition in Cape Town. Commemorating all the black families, adding up to more than 60,000 people in total, that were chased from their own homes and relocated when Apartheid struck, the museum is filled with photographs, paintings, street signs and other artefacts from District Six’s time as a vibrant, multicultural area which residents from a variety of ethnic groups called home.

Some of the museum’s highlights are the recreated homes and living spaces, audio-visual recordings of daily life in the district and a huge map on which former residents mark out demolished landmarks and features that made their neighbourhood unique. If you speak to some of the staff, you’ll find that many of them used to live in District Six themselves, and have their own stories to tell.
