Devils Postpile National Monument

Geology rocks (literally).

Encased by mountainous wilderness is the Devils Postpile, a fascinating natural rock formation. This 60-foot tall formation of columnar basalt, along with the Rainbow Falls waterfall, makes up the 800-acre Devils Postpile National Monument in California. Declared a National Monument since 1911, the basalt columns of the Devils Postpile were in fact formed about 100,000 years ago by an eruption of lava in the region.

Keep a lookout for the various wildlife roaming the area or perhaps join your children as they embark on the Junior Ranger programme! Upon collecting the activities, they are able to take the Junior Ranger oath, receiving a badge and certificate. Hike along one of the trails of the unusually symmetrical formation, or head to the waterfall for some Trout fishing at the adjoining river. With so much to discover, Devils Postpile national monument is ideal for both adults and children alike.
