Originally a defence tower part of the town’s fortifications, Den Halder Castle is a small but quietly gorgeous building dating from the 14th century. With is gabled grey roofs and a narrow spire, Den Halder Castle is a national monument that cuts a striking figure against the townscape. The castle is perched on the riverbank of the tranquil river Geul, which flows along the north face of the castle. While Den Halder Castle is not currently open to the public, its elegant façade is such a prominent part of Valkenburg’s medieval charm that the castle is worth a look. Take a detour to view the castle, dine at the terrace of a nearby restaurant, or even stroll through the adjoining Den Halderpark that was once part of the castle estate – the subdued allure of the castle will make you fall in love with the town and its ambiance.
