De Zijlpoort is a city gate in Leiden, constructed in 1667, with a grand triumphal arc that resembles the design of the Roman’s. Connecting with the city wall and the bridge, the gate is shaped like a parallelogram and it is one of the only two original gates that survived the ravages of time. The gate’s name is linked to the nearby Zijl river, with its calm waters.

As you get closer to this awe-inspiring gate, you will notice two lions flanking Leiden’s coat of arms, along with the mythical Mars and Medusa. Above the passage rests a hall, which has been home to different individuals over time, from a society of amateur poets and playwrights to a school for poor children. Now, you can enjoy a scenic view of the river, with boats floating past as you savor a meal at the brasserie.
