De Haar Castle

Straight out of a fairytale.

One look at De Haar Castle in Utrecht and you might feel like you've stepped into a storybook world. There really is nothing quite as magical as the sight of this castle that looks practically like it's a relic of the medieval times. Indeed, with its multiple towers that might remind you of Rapunzel's very own, and spires that rise high into blue skies, the castle remains an imposing and stunning presence. Verdant greenery surrounds the castle, dotted with vibrant colors of flowers in bloom. Some of the castle's renowned guests include Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.

The castle underwent complete restoration and partial rebuilding in the 19th century, and with much care, has been preserved as seen today. It was a work designed by the renowned Pierre Cuypers, a Dutch architect on the ruins of a castle that had previously stood there. Don’t lose yourself in the façade of the castle: head inside to gaze at intricate woodwork, accompanied by various works in the Rothschild collections. Admire the well-kept porcelain imported from China and Japan, along with some Flemish tapestries and paintings depicting religious subject matter. If you’ve seen the carrier coach of a Japanese shogun’s concubine in Tokyo, then you can find its twin right here in the castle. These two are the only ones of their kind in the entire world! When you need a break, head out into the vast park gardens to enjoy a peaceful walk through the greenery.
