The tallest wooden windmill in Netherlands, it is no wonder this beautiful sight has been listed as a National Monument.
The Netherlands is especially famous for its windmills, which dot its landscape intermittently and produce a charming sight. The De Gooyer is a dignified structure nestled just outside of the city center, taking one away from the more touristy and overpopulated areas of Amsterdam. You will be transported back in time to a slower pace of life, one that followed the windmill’s large metal blades. Although the De Gooyer’s blades are still functional, it is no longer in operation. The original mill was built in the 16th century, and has since shifted location several times before taking up its current position atop a stone foundation at the Funenkade.
The interior of the windmill is not open to public visits, but its architecture nonetheless presents a quaint sight for photo opportunities. Right under the windmill is a great brewery that boasts a fine selection of beers, as well as a couple of inviting bars nearby for you to relax and unwind.
