Dar al-Makhzen (The Royal Palace of Rabat)

Witness the grandeur of The Royal Palace of Rabat, where the royalty still resides to this day.

The Dar-al-Makhzen also known as The Royal Palace of Rabat is the official residence of the country’s royalty. Located in the heart of the city, this magnificent palace was built in 1864 to replace its predecessor which had stood there from the 700s. It is strategically constructed on a parade ground, and plays host to many other buildings, including a mosque, a cookery school to train the chefs who will be serving the royal family, a library, as well as accommodation for the Royal Guards. But the complex has more than just that; it even houses a schoolThe Collège Royal is used to educate the older members of the royal family in various disciplines and prepare them for future leadership roles. But besides various other buildings, the palace also has a brilliantly designed garden, although unfortunately, it is closed to the public. But if you strain your eyes enough, you should be able to make out the neatly pruned hedges and ornate fountains that litter the wonderful garden. Nevertheless, you can still admire this spectacular building from the outside. Dar-el-Makhzen has to be on your Rabat city tour list!
