See the temple that was built after a vision of the Divine Mother, in the form of the goddess Kali that appeared in Rashmoni’s dream.
Located in Dakshineswar near Kolkata, the sacred Dakshineswar Kali Temple was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist who bravely revolted against the British colonisers. Upon entering the compound, be amazed by the 30m nine-spired main temple, which was inspired by the traditional 'Nava-ratna' style of Bengal architecture. Look out for the twelve shrines, dedicated to Shiva, standing majestically along the banks of the Hooghly River. Be impressed by the temple dedicated to Radha-Krishna and the interesting sight of a ghat bathing in the river.
Also, let your eyes be dazzled by the sight of the exotic Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum), which is the sanctuary of the idol of the Goddess Kali. With Kali standing on the chest of a Shiva, who was lying down, be awed by the thousand silver lotus petals upon which these two idols stand. As the day gives way to the night, do not miss the stunning view of the fiery red sunset over the river with the imposing Dakshineswar Kali Temple in the backdrop.
