Cumae

Remnants of a glorious past.

The ancient city of Cumae has lasted for 3 millennia, even if its people are long gone. These fascinating archaeological ruins tell of the Greek colony founded in this area, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Turbulent history lies within the structures that stand today, and you will no doubt be drawn to the fascinating remains of a people who flourished, right until after the fall of the Roman Empire.

The city was eventually abandoned due to the increase in swamps there, which hid many of the Cumaean treasures for very long. Archaeological excavations eventually led to the finding of various items like glass paste jewels, Egyptian sculptures and “sykphoi”, which are black painted vases. Head to the Temple of Apollo, dedicated to the Apollo, the protector of Cumae. It is also here that you can find the entrance to the cave of the well-known Cumaean Sibyl, who foretold the future as her kind does. There’s no doubt that you will leave an expert in Cumaean affairs, history buff or not.
