Corcovado

Once known as the Pinaculo de Tentaco, or Peak of Temptations, Corcovado Hill certainly tempts its visitors with sugar sweet views.

At the crack of dawn when the birds have fallen silent and the hum of insects is a little more than a thrum in the background, little can be seen from the platform. All that meets the eye is a thick curtain of white, sheets drawn over the props before the show begins. It starts subtly, a faint tinge of orange along the edges and slowly it brightens to a deep, flame red. The curtains of white part to first reveal a single curved peak in the distance, domed head jutting out and identifying it as Sugar Loaf. It faces a clear plate of glass glimmering under the first few rays of light. Early morning vessels and fishing boats bob along the Atlantic Ocean, only their silhouettes visible from this elevation. You spot 2 thin lines of maple, the coasts of Copacabana and Ipanema with the Guanabara Bay to one side slowly shaking itself awake, the town behind following in its footsteps. At 2300ft there’s nothing really, that doesn’t reach the eye.

Tips Before You Go
Most people who visit Corcovado Hill do so for the Redeemer, one of the seven wonders of the world. But as you’re travelling up don’t forget to appreciate the mountain as well. Looking back, we see that it was the sheer grandeur of the mountain that led to the conception of a massive statue of Christ in the first place. There are electric trains and vans, pit stop locations to stop for a picture and more. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, consider scaling the mountain on foot but this should only be attempted by the well-trained: climbers with both sufficient equipment and experience.
