Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco
The oldest wood and glass conservatory in the West.
Originally meant to be a private house for a wealthy business man in San Francisco, but he died before construction could begin. Pieces of the property were discovered and donated to the city in 1879, and thus, the Conservatory of Flowers was born.
This greenhouse and garden houses a huge collection of rare and exotic plants within Golden Gate Park. Home to about 1,700 species of plants, this conservatory includes aquatic plants, carnivorous plants, and even plants that are more than 100 years of age! There is also a space dedicated to temporary exhibits that changes each April and November, so visitors will always have something new to look at when coming here.

Tips Before You Go
Do some research beforehand, because the conservatory has free admission days on occasion. Those with green thumbs may be interested in the small gift shop in the middle of the conservatory. It sells a variety of gardening supplies, including seeds!
