Fancy a cup of coffee? If you lived in the 20th century, you could have had one in style, at the Confiteria El Molino. It’s an art noveau style coffeehouse located at the junction of two important avenues, directly in front of the National Congress building in Buenos Aires. And it’s not just any coffeehouse. Even from afar, the building will strike you with its swanky architecture and tall front turret. Although no longer functioning, its proud façade still looks like a hotel more than anything else. Conceived in the early 20th century by Cayeteno Brenna, a famous confectioner, he envisaged a café that would capture the imagination of the Argentinian public. In its heyday it was a sight to behold, with the turret featuring stained glass windows and decorative windmill sails, which were lit from the inside by modern electric lighting. The well-loved café was known as one of the ‘Bares Notables’ (literally ‘Remarkable Bars’), for its significant place in local culture. Even today, a trip past the building on a walking tour is sure to capture your attention.
