Como Cathedral

A grandiose cathedral at the heart of Como’s historic centre.

In the middle of Como’s historic centre stands the majestic Como Cathedral, whose majestic towers rise over the top of other structures to dominate the city’s skyline. Its facade is a magnificent work of stellar craftsmanship. Both imposing and beautiful, it is filled with gloriously detailed statues depicting Adam and Eve, the Saints, other biblical characters and features an intricate rose window.

The cathedral’s interior is a luscious treasury of warmth and colour. Tapestries woven in Ferrara, Florence and Antwerp hang from the walls in sheets of deep red and brown while banisters carved from warm-hued wood adorn the walls. Its ceiling is a kaleidoscope of gold and blue, with blue floral painted over a gold background. A marble relief of Christ at Calvary separates the congregation from the elaborate, glittering altar.

Bursting with luxury and opulence, the Como Cathedral is an emblem of Como’s glorious past when it stood at the core of trade lines connecting Italy to northern and central Europe. It is truly one magnificent sight to behold, both inside and outside!

Tips Before You Go
The cathedral continues to be an important religious site in Como today as it still conducts regular Mass. Check its website for Mass timings to experience a traditional Mass held in this historical church. Be sure to dress modestly when you visit so as not to be deemed as being disrespectful. However, should you desire to be up and about while doing your exploring, you might want to avoid the Mass timings or else your constant movements will potentially serve as a distraction to the parishioners.
