Colossus of Rhodes

A statute of the Green god Helios in Rhodes, Greece.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a statute depicting the Green titan-god of the sun Helios which was established in the city of Rhodes by Charles of Lindos in 280 BC. It was bestowed the prestigious title as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, erected to commemorate Rhodes’ victory over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus.

According to several descriptions, the state once stood at nearly 33m high, about the height of the Statute of Liberty, making it the tallest in the ancient world. It was however destroyed during the earthquake of 226 BC and was never reconstructed. But in 2015, plans to rebuild a new, bigger and even better Colossus at Rhodes Harbour surfaced though the actual location of the original statue is still much debated about. With so much talk about the new designs for an iconic and important historical figure, the Colossus of Rhodes is definitely going to astound everyone as it previously did.
