Cologne Zoological Garden (Kölner Zoo)

One of the largest and oldest zoos in Germany.

The Cologne Zoological Garden was first opened in 1860, and is the third oldest zoo in Germany. Spanning across 20 hectares, the zoo is home to over 10,000 animals across 700 species from all over the world. This large zoo is also home to an aquarium housing 70 tanks, which gives visitors an deeper look into the underwater world spanning from the Rhine to the Pacific. Insect lovers will definitely love the insectarium, which houses a diverse collection of insects, ranging from harmless butterflies to poisonous spiders.

The zoo’s main enclosure, the Hippodom, is a large walk-through enclosure that simulates the African riverscape. See the inhabitants of the African river plains here, including hippos and Nile crocodiles. A large elephant park also exists within the zoo, so be sure not to miss this! Unlike many zoos, this zoo allows for overnight camping in its grounds; remember to do bookings prior!

Tips Before You Go
The zoo can get really crowded on weekends, so visiting on a weekday may be better. Regardless of the crowd, you will definitely be able to see the animals in their enclosures, but the quality of the view would naturally depend on how crowded it is.
