Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom)

The pride of Cologne’s people.

One of Germany’s most visited landmarks, the Cologne Cathedral is a huge cathedral that can be seen from almost all points of the city. In fact, it is so immense that it covers an area larger than a football field! It is also the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and houses the second-tallest spires, after the Ulm Minster in Ulm, Germany. Marvel at the majestic facade of the cathedral, made even more impressive with its iconic twin spires. The South Tower also provides an impressive view across the city, but requires visitors to climb a total of 533 steps to reach the top.

Furthermore, the cathedral houses St. Peter’s Bell, the largest free-swinging church bell in the world. Once you come inside, you will see many priceless works of art, with some even dating back to the 4th century. This cathedral is undoubtedly a masterpiece in itself, and is definitely a must-visit if you are in Cologne.

Tips Before You Go
Taking a guided tour is highly recommended if you wish to get the greatest insight into the architecture, history and art of the cathedral. Be sure to check if there is a service happening too, because you won’t be allowed to have a look around if one is currently happening. However, you are more than welcome to enter and join in the prayer.
