Cockatoo Island

From maritime to arts, culture and even glamping.

Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour and has been declared a World Heritage Site due to its significant functions in shipbuilding and maritime industries in the past. Previously a convict penal establishment for convicts who has committed offenses in the British colonies, the Island was transformed into a dockyard and shipbuilding complex in the mid 19th-century. Its extensive record of its dockyards and convict history lend for a spectacular insight into the island's past.

In recent years, the Cockatoo Island has made a name for itself in the cultural arena, hosting some of the most noteworthy events like the Biennale of Sydney and the Cockatoo Island Festival. On top of art exhibitions for culture-vultures, a campsite was opened in 2008 making it a hot spot for camping, glamping and even viewing the remarkable New Year’s Eve fireworks! There are also alternative island holiday accommodations with fantastic views, or feel free to just drop by for a picnic, a leisurely walk or a guided tour. Offering you a scenic harbour view from its many cafe's, the Island is sure to astound you with long-standing cultural heritage and its amazing modern activities!
