City Walls of Essaouira

They’re not just any walls, they’re the Swerah! Get ready to lose yourself in this charming city steeped with history.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the City Walls of Essaouira are more than just carved rocks. Built during the Portuguese colonisation, they hold memories and stories of a distant past, and were initially called Mogador. Believe it or not, this majestic fortress was actually once a pirate city until the 18th century! Considering how well-maintained the city still is, it is a must-visit for travellers who will definitely leave wanting to visit more of such intriguing places. The music of Essaouira which is a refreshing fusion of blues, rock and the local Gnawa music can be heard close to these city walls, adding more character to them. If you’re a music lover, then the Gnaoua Festival of World Music which is held here in Essaouira at the end of every June is absolutely not to be missed. While you won’t get to see famous international bands, you will be able to experience the local music scene and interact with locals there too. There is just so much in this city, from the beach and the food to the music, that it’d be a shame if you skipped out on visiting this town simply because it seems too quaint.
